How Do You Check the Production Capacity of a Plywood Supplier?

A plywood supplier’s production capacity should be checked with actual output records, equipment data, shift hours, raw-material supply, and current order load rather than a quoted monthly figure. A factory claiming 5,000 m³ per month may have only 1,000–1,500 m³ available after existing contracts, maintenance, and rejected panels are counted. Check at least 6–12 months of production records, hot-press cycles, veneer-dryer output, sanding capacity, staffing, and on-time delivery history. For a 1,220 × 2,440 × 18 mm panel, each sheet contains about 0.0536 m³, so capacity claims can be converted into actual sheet quantities and compared with your order volume.

Factory capacity should first be separated into installed capacity, normal output, and available output. Installed capacity describes what the equipment may produce under planned operating conditions, while normal output reflects what the factory usually makes during regular shifts. Available output is what remains after confirmed orders have taken their production slots.

A plant rated at 4,500 m³ per month may normally produce 3,600 m³. If 2,800 m³ is already booked, the buyer is working with roughly 800 m³ before allowance for maintenance, rejects, or rework. A supplier quoting only the 4,500 m³ figure gives an incomplete picture of the volume that can actually be assigned to a new customer.

Historical records help test whether quoted numbers match factory activity. Ask for at least 6 months of monthly production reports, and 12 months is better when the order will repeat throughout the year. Compare the average month, highest month, lowest month, rejected volume, and finished volume released for shipment.

For example, a 2025 production record might show 3,100 m³ in January, 3,350 m³ in February, 3,280 m³ in March, and 3,420 m³ in April. If the supplier is claiming 6,000 m³ every month, the difference needs an explanation based on new equipment, added shifts, outsourcing, or a change in product mix.

Equipment should then be checked against the production record. Hot presses are one of the first areas to inspect because the number of presses alone says very little. Buyers should record press size, number of openings, cycle time, working hours per shift, shifts per day, maintenance status, and the plywood thicknesses normally processed.

A factory with four 15-opening hot presses does not automatically have twice the output of a factory with two presses. If one plant operates 20 hours per day at 85% equipment availability while another operates 10 hours at 65%, their actual monthly output may be much closer than the machine count suggests.

Press time also changes by specification. A standard 18 mm panel does not necessarily follow the same cycle as 9 mm plywood, 25 mm structural plywood, or a product using a different adhesive system. For this reason, the factory should calculate capacity using the exact thickness, lay-up, glue type, and surface treatment included in the buyer’s specification.

Volume conversion makes the discussion easier to test. One 1,220 × 2,440 × 18 mm sheet contains about 0.0536 m³. A monthly requirement of 12,000 sheets therefore represents about 643 m³ before packing losses, rejected sheets, samples, and replacement panels are considered.

If the supplier can allocate 750 m³ per month to that specification, the order would use about 86% of the available allocation. Running that close to the available limit leaves little room for equipment servicing or late raw-material deliveries, so the buyer should ask what production volume was actually sustained during the previous 6 or 12 months.

Hot pressing is only one part of the production flow. Veneer drying may limit output earlier in the process, while sanding, calibration, film lamination, edge processing, inspection, or packing may limit finished output later. A factory can have unused press capacity and still be unable to increase monthly shipments.

A useful capacity review follows material from veneer intake to packed plywood:

  • Compare dryer output with daily veneer consumption.

  • Check how many lay-up stations feed each press.

  • Record cold-press and hot-press cycle times.

  • Compare sanding-line speed with pressed-panel output.

  • Review finished-panel inspection and packing capacity.

  • Ask how many production days in a 30-day month are normally lost to maintenance.

If a dryer can prepare veneer for 120 m³ per day while the presses can handle 150 m³, the dryer sets the practical ceiling unless dried veneer is bought from outside suppliers. If outside veneer accounts for 35% of input, ask how the supplier controls moisture, thickness, species, and grading before the material enters production.

Moisture control deserves attention because inconsistent veneer moisture can affect bonding, panel flatness, and pressing stability. Buyers can ask how often moisture is checked, what meters are used, and whether readings are recorded by batch. Sampling 10 sheets from one finished stack gives a weaker picture than checking multiple stacks across several production dates.

Raw-material supply should be reviewed next because installed machinery cannot compensate for insufficient veneer. Ask how many approved veneer suppliers are used, what proportion is sourced under regular agreements, how much inventory is normally kept on site, and whether certain face veneers are purchased only after receiving a customer order.

For a plant consuming 100 m³ of veneer input per production day, keeping only one or two days of material on hand creates a very different supply situation from holding 7–14 days. The appropriate level varies by species, storage conditions, purchasing model, and delivery distance, but the buyer should understand how production continues when one supplier is late.

Product mix also changes output. A factory making large volumes of standard Commercial Plywood may produce more cubic meters per shift than the same factory making calibrated furniture panels with selected faces, tight thickness tolerances, several sanding passes, individual labels, or customized packaging.

An 18 mm panel may move through fewer handling stages than a product requiring two sanding passes, face selection, patch repair, additional grading, and retail-ready packaging. If those extra steps add 60–90 seconds per sheet, a large order can add many labor hours even when press capacity remains unchanged.

Current order load should therefore be requested for the same production window as the planned purchase. Ask how much capacity is already committed for the next 30, 60, and 90 days, then compare that figure with normal historical output rather than the factory’s theoretical maximum.

A supplier producing 3,500 m³ in an average month and already holding 3,000 m³ of confirmed orders has around 500 m³ before maintenance and rejected material. If your order requires 700 m³, the schedule should show whether volume will come from overtime, another shift, later delivery, outsourced production, or movement of other orders.

Labor numbers provide another check. Record employees per shift in veneer sorting, lay-up, pressing, sanding, inspection, and packing. A factory operating two 8-hour shifts may have room to add hours, while a factory already operating close to 24 hours has less room to increase output without adding equipment or reducing downtime.

Employee turnover also matters. If 20% of production workers have been replaced within a year, training requirements can affect processes that depend on manual grading or lay-up consistency. Buyers do not need a perfect retention rate, but the supplier should be able to explain staffing levels and how replacement operators are trained.

Quality records should be viewed together with production numbers. Gross production is not the same as saleable production. A plant producing 4,000 m³ with a 6% reject-and-rework rate releases less acceptable volume than one producing 3,900 m³ with a 2% rate, assuming specifications and inspection methods are comparable.

Review inspection logs for thickness tolerance, dimensions, moisture, bonding, surface grade, core construction, warping, packaging, and any product-specific test requirements. EN 314-2 is commonly used for plywood bonding quality classification in Europe, while EN 636 covers plywood specifications for different service conditions, so European buyers often reference requirements linked to the intended end use.

Maintenance records provide another comparison between theoretical and normal output. Ask for preventive-maintenance schedules covering the previous 6–12 months, especially for dryers, presses, sanding lines, boilers, compressors, forklifts, and electrical systems. A line rated for 30 operating days does not produce for 30 days if planned and unplanned stoppages remove several shifts.

If equipment availability averages 90%, a theoretical 4,000 m³ monthly line starts closer to 3,600 m³ before product changes, quality losses, holidays, or material shortages are counted. The supplier should be able to show how often major machines stop and how spare parts are managed.

A live factory audit can connect the paperwork with daily operations. Look at machine status, work-in-progress levels, finished inventory, raw veneers, packing activity, production boards, and the dates printed on batch labels. Production accumulation between two processes often shows where throughput is slower.

For remote audits, ask for a live video walk-through during normal production rather than only prerecorded factory footage. Request views of all presses, dryers, sanding lines, raw-material storage, finished-goods areas, QC rooms, and the production board for the current week. A 30–45 minute live review can answer many capacity questions before an on-site visit.

Container planning provides a final numerical check. If one container carries about 45–55 m³ depending on thickness, density, packaging, container limits, and loading plan, a 20-container program may require roughly 900–1,100 m³ each month. The supplier’s available monthly allocation should comfortably cover that range.

Before increasing annual volume, start with a commercial order and record promised production days, actual completion date, inspected quantity, rejected percentage, replacement quantity, and shipment date. After 3–6 orders, the buyer will have its own record of how much plywood the supplier can produce on time at the required specification, which is more useful than a capacity number printed in a company profile.
